Ciate x Chloe Morello Beauty Haul - Pretty, Fun, Fearless Palette

14 November 2016

The Ciate x Chloe Morello Beauty Haul was recently released online at Mecca.com and in stores at Mecca Maxima, honestly it's not a collab that would have ever been on my radar, I wouldn't usually buy an eyeshadow palette from a brand that was known for nail polish (and not even spectacular ones at that) and I don't follow Chloe Morello but when I saw the shades inside I was sold.

The set retails for $70AUD and contains a 15 pan palette, mini Wonderwand Mascara, mini Liquid Velvet in Pin Up and a makeup pouch.

I'll start with the extras in the box, the makeup pouch is a navy blue, faux leather zip ouch with pretty rose gold hardware and tassel detail, the inside is lined and Ciate London is printed on the front in gold.

The deluxe minis included are a 6ml tube of Wonderwand Mascara and a 2ml tube of Liquid Velvet in Pin Up.

The mascara has an hourglass shaped brush that grips the lashes well, it helps to lengthen, define, separate and volumise the lashes, it's a nice all-rounder that wears well through the day, doesn't smudge or flake and has a jet black formula, however, it isn't waterproof so if you need a waterproof mascara to hold a curl in your lashes I would look elsewhere.

The Liquid Velvet in Pin Up is a pretty, fairly universal colour, it's a mid toned plum with a nude hint to it which makes it very wearable. The formula is very opaque, only requires one thin layer and sets matte, however it doesn't set completely dry so it will transfer but the upside is that it's very comfortable to wear and it doesn't flake or wear off in patches as you go through the day. The wand is slightly diamond shaped with a tapered tip which allows for easy application to the inner corners and along the cupids bow.

Right, let's get to business. The name of the palette; Pretty, Fun and Fearless is a combination of the three palettes they released going by the same individual names in early 2016 (may have been late 2015) so there isn't much originality going on there, the print on the palette is a combination of flamingos, sketched flowers, stars and other random stuff that looks a bit mish-mashy.

The palette is made up of a hard cardboard, has a magnetic closure and a mirror large enough to do a full face of make.

The 15 shades consist 9 mattes and 6 metallics. The top row and the two shades on the far left of the center row are all warm neutrals, the rest are cool shades, however, Dainty is borderline neutral, it looks pink in the pan buy has a yellow reflect to it so depending on your skin tone it could pull either way.

The balance of mattes to metallics is quite good in my opinion, everything is different enough to create a different look almost every single time you pick up the palette and I really love that. You'll always have choice with a shade and finish range like this.

The formula of the mattes is nice, they aren't super pigmented (I think anyone who purchase the Modern Renaissance palette this year will be spoilt by that formula!) but they are easy to work with, build well if you want extra colour and hold their own when they are being layered so they don't look like a muddy mess.

The first row consists of warm neutral browns with two transition/light crease shades (Skinny Dip + Unconditional), two darker crease shades (On Fire + Queen Bee) and a metallic lid colour (Shine Bright). They all swatch well with a finger and apply well with a brush (keeping in mind that the metallics can be difficult to work with).

The second row starts off with two warm shades and then splits to the cool shades. The two warm shades (Vaycay + My Tribe) consist of a metallic and a matte, My Tribe is basically the colour of my skin so it's difficult to see but it works beautifully as a base for blending mattes or softening the look if you go to dark. The cool shades (Be Sassy + Jet Setter + Happy) are a nice little trio on their own, Be Sassy doesn't swatch well but it's a very light colour and works beautifully as a soft cool transition shade.

The bottom row is predominantly cool and consists of three metallics (Dainty + Fierce + Own It), Dainty has a little yellow in it so can be considered neutral but it pulls cool on my skin, Own It is the only metallic that I feel is actually lacking in pigmentation, it just doesn't have a richness to it like the others do. The two mattes (Flirt & Day Dream) are consistent with the formula of the other mattes.

This palette hasn't been widely loved which I think is a shame because it has such potential. I do think Ciate dropped the ball with the formula, specifically the metallics, many people have reported that they are difficult to work with and need to be built up to get any pigmentation and initially I experienced that too, I went in with a typical synthetic shader brush (Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush) and it was rubbish, it took me about 3 seconds to switch to a dense, natural bristle shadow brush (Crown C150 Angle Fluff) because I hoped the structure of natural hair would hold pigment better, which it does. The main issue is that not everyone has natural bristle brushes and not all natural bristle brushes give great results with this palette, if the formula doesn't work with all brush types then you're going to have people who are disappointed with how the shades perform. The formula of the metallics would benefit from further testing and tweaking.

Personally I love this palette, the shade range is perfect for me and I'm lucky enough to own a brush that works well with the metallics, I do see and have experienced the flaws that others found with the palette and while I do recommend the palette I do it with a word of caution; it may take you some time to get the most out of the metallics, if you can't be bothered I'd say spend your money elsewhere.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts! I absolutely love this palette - mostly for the shade range and matte shadows. The shades are just so wearable and I love the variety. I agree the metallics are a little difficult to work with and can appear lacklustre at times. I find applying with a finger alright, and I have a natural haired shadow brush that's quite 'scratchy' that works fairly well to apply it.
