Because why not?

David Jones - Spring/Summer 2015 Beauty Sampler Totes

4 August 2015
It's that time of year again! David Jones have released the Spring/Summer Beauty Sampler Totes.

For a little bit of background (in case you've never heard of these bags before), they retail for $19.95 each and you are required to buy a full priced beauty item from any of the  David Jones stockists to qualify for the bag. If you want both you may be required to buy two products but some stores are more relaxed about the rules and will allow you to buy one item for both bags and some are even cool with you buying a sale item to qualify, just depends how nice your SA is on the day.

All of the bags have 4 core items in them this year, those products are pictured (and listed) below.

  • David Jones Beauty Men's Protective Moisturiser SPF 30+, Full Size 120g.
  • David Jones Beauty Tinted Day Cream SPF 30, Full Size 100g.
  • Ecoya Mini Celebration Candle 80g (smells like spring!).
  • Molton Brown Gingerlily Body Wash, Sample 30ml (also smells like spring).
And here we go with the honesty (no filter). The core products don't wow me, the candle I love and I'm glad to have two of, the same goes for the Molton Brown body wash, it smells lovely and I'll definitely enjoy using them, but having the men's product in there as a core item surprises me, there are lots of men in my life so I can find a home for these but I do feel like these should have been the optional items in the bags, to assume that every women has a man in her life that will use a beauty product is quite presumptive, maybe I'm being nit-picky, this is just my opinion.

As for the tinted day cream, I'm not excited. You've essentially got a three-in-one product here, a moisturiser, SPF and light coverage foundation. Some of you might know how I feel about multi-use products and if you don't, my view on them is that they are mostly shit. This one doesn't have anything going on in the ingredients that is exciting, it's just cheap and basic. I feel that if you're not going to do something well, don't bother doing it at all. Perhaps I'll be eating my words after I try it, but like I said, the ingredients list isn't promising.

Edit: Tried the DJ's Tinted Day Cream this morning - It oxidises to a beautiful orange tinge so if you're in to the Oompa Loompa look you'll love this!

Let's move on to the optional contents of the bags, starting with the black tagged bag.

  • Burt's Bees Intense Hydrating Cream Cleanser, Deluxe Sample 20g.
  • Kora Organics By Miranda Kerr Vitamin Enriched Lip Balm, Full Size 10ml.
  • OPI Nail Lacquer, Full Size 15ml.

  • Philosophy Time In A Bottle Serum, Sample Size 2ml.
  • St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, Deluxe Sample 50ml
So with the black bag there isn't a whole lot of wow going on. beauty addicts never need a new lip balm because we have 50 unopened tubes stashed away and 30 opened, half used tubes floating around in our bags, cars, offices, boyfriends house, under the couch cushions and in the pocket of those jeans we just put through the washing machine.

The cream cleanser and serum would be handy for traveling, and the same may go for the bronzing mousse (feel free to enlighten me, but it looks a little small to do a whole application?), the nail polish is probably the most exciting item here and if you can get a colour you love and have been coveting it will make the rest of the bag a bonus jonas.

You will also find a 20% off Molton Brown coupon (when you spend $80 or more) and a $20 off Kora Organics 3 Step System (139.95) in the bag.

Now for the white tagged bags

  • Antipodes Apostle Skin-Brightening Serum, Deluxe Sample 10ml.
  • Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser, Deluxe Sample 30ml.
  • Napoleon Perdis Lip Gloss, Deluxe Sample 0.7ml.

  • Natio For Men Maximum Razor Relief Healing Lotion, Full Size 125ml.
  • Weleda Pomegranate Firming Serum, Deluxe Sample 7ml.
I feel like the contents of the white bag are head and shoulders above the black bag but it's still not a super smart curation. you have two serums which I'm not really upset about but had they swapped one out for a moisturising product or an eye cream you would have a great all round bag, and if they had chucked in a fragrance mini instead of the men's product this would have been on point. A good combination of skincare, makeup, hair and fragrance would make for excellent contents.

Hard to please aren't I..

The white tagged bags also contain some coupons, you'll receive a 30% off Weleda products (not valid on packs), a complimentary MicroZone Treatment from Dermalogica and a complimentary Makeup Shakeup Lesson From Napoleon.

The tote bag it's self is very similar to that of the A/W 2014 tote, faux black patent leather with laser cut holes depicting a David Jones store front and a silver background. Bit tacky.

What are your thoughts on this years S/S Beauty Sampler Totes?

Links provided are for shopping examples only, I have personally purchased from some (not all) of these online stores but I highly recommend researching before buying. 1. Love your honest reviews as always :) Such a helpful post...the tinted day cream and men's moisturiser as core products are kinda dealbreakers for me.

  2. Thanks for this informative post Hailey O MUA, I totally agree with you opinion, this time DJ bag is least impressive, only few items and then only few high end brand, most of the products are from their previous bags and the worst thing is MEN's SKIN care. I think I should not buy DJ bag this year as most of the things I already own and MEN's Skin care is total waste for me because my husband is not interested in skin care products.

  3. Thanks for such a helpful blog - I have loved the DJ's bags previously but gave last one a miss and the concept of wonderful orange tinted moisturiser with a men's product thrills me like no end!!!!!! NOT!! I have enough trouble with tinted moisturisers anyway without looking for trouble.

Extremely grateful, thanks so much for your honesty.
