Because why not?

Blogmas - Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette

8 December 2014
I'm going to be pumping out a few palette swatching/reviews over the next week or so because there are a few available on the market at the moment (both new and old) that would make wonderful chrissy presents for yourself or other beauty lovers in your life.

But really I'm promoting spoiling ourselves here, we must love ourselves right?

When it comes to buying palettes for myself I either want it or I don't, there is no in-between. When I want a palette, if I swatch it and I'm not 100% impressed by the shadows or I have a million similar colours, I still have to have it, it's less about the shadows and more about the palette it's self. Some of you will know exactly what I'm talking about here. Hello friend.

Today I'm going to swatch the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette and just talk a little about each colour, while I might not really care how they all perform, I know a lot of people do give a shit about pigment, quality and consistency when they are forking out money for items like this because not everyone is a weirdo like me and just buys palettes because they want more palettes.

The palette itself mimics the look of a block of chocolate which I have to say I enjoy, it's a bit different and quirky and I like shit like that. The palette has a magnetic closure which I don't find to be particularly strong but that's not really a big deal for me, I actually think it's a good feature because struggling to open an eye shadow palette can lead to fumbling and dropping and we all know that usually ends in tears.

The palette features 14 eye shadows (0.95g each) and two highlights (2.8g each) for a total of 16 shades. Five of the shadows are matte but some have a few sparkly bits in them that you'll hardly even notice, the rest are shimmery or contain a micro glitter. The highlights (they actually call them shadows but I'm not down with calling them that) come in a matte and shimmer so you can take your pick for any given look.

Now we all know that these shadows are supposed to smell like cocoa powder and they do which I actually don't like, the only makeup items that I like smelling like food are lip products and even then it poses the problem of 'I want to lick this off my face', it's just a bit weird really.

I've taken a little snippet from the Sephora website that I thought should be included:
Too Faced Co-founder and Creative Director Jerrod Blandino learned of the healing properties of cocoa while getting a chocolate facial in Maui. With Chocolate Bar he created a first-of-its-kind palette that combines the healing benefits of chocolate with richly pigmented, velvety smooth shadows. Chocolate has been used for centuries for its soothing properties and to protect, condition, and heal skin that has been damaged by sun and wind. Studies have shown that the scent of cocoa powder can increase memory and brain power.
I'm not too sure how I feel about that last bit about memory and brain power but it's food for thought I guess. *Badum-Tish* Awkward face.

Alright enough about all the shit we don't really care about, let's look at the pretty colours.

Gilded Ganache - Almost looks like a forest green in the palette but it's actually a dark brown with gold shimmer, I find this is best used with a primer for intense colour because I don't think it performs that great without one.

White Chocolate - Matte, warm toned cream colour, not super pigmented but easily amped up with a cream base or primer.

Salted Caramel - Matte, warm toned brown with orange undertones, pigmentation is pretty good.

Marzipan - Buttery soft, intensely shimmery, warm toned peachy pink, great pigmentation. Stunning.

Semi-Sweet - Matte, warm toned medium brown, pigment is pretty good again.

Hazelnut - Another amazingly smooth shimmer, this one is a gorgeous bronzy brown. Great pigmentation.

Creme Brulee - Warm toned, shimmery gold that is a little on the 'darker than usual' side, with an almost metallic finish, Amazing pigmentation, this colour is killer.

Haute Chocolate - A nice warm toned chocolate-y brown, well pigmented and as with all of these beautiful shimmery colours the shadow is gorgeously smooth.

Milk Chocolate - Medium brown with a warm base and matte finish, a little lighter than Semi-Sweet but similar enough, pigment is good.

Black Forrest Truffle - Burgundy brownish colour with a bronze micro glitter, this one feels a little gritty in the pan but the pigment is nice enough.

Triple Fudge - Dark grey-ish brown with a matte finish, this one needs to be built up for good colour pay off.

Strawberry Bon Bon - The only colour in the palette that seems to not fit, it's a cool toned light pink with a matte finish and also requires build up and a good base for colour pay off.

Candied Violet - Violet with pink, purple, gold and silver micro glitter, another one with a gritty texture in the pan and the colour pay off isn't great.

Amaretto - Warm toned, light coppery brown, gorgeous texture like the other frosted finish colours and great pigmentation.

Cherry Cordial - Technically this is a matte base with a little sparkle, it's a warm plum with flecks of gold shimmer, pretty but needs a little work for great colour pay off.

Champagne Truffle - The shimmery highlight, a pink-y white with a gorgeous sheen, fantastic texture and awesome pigment.

The colours in the palette that are winners are definitely the shimmery colours, their texture is great, pigment is fantastic and they are easy to work with while some of the mattes leave a bit to be desired.

The palette also comes with a little leaflet that will help you to create some different eye looks, I haven't bothered to play with this yet.

All in all, it's a nice palette, I don't use it as often as my Naked 1 but there are some nice colours in there that I like to use for daily makeup looks and I often pull it out when I have time to experiment and want to fool around with new colours.

The Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette retails for $65.00AUD and can be purchased at Mecca Cosmetica.
