Because why not?

Packing For A Short Trip AKA What's In My Suitcase.

9 October 2014
By the time you are reading this I will be heading off for a few days away. Sounds lovely doesn't it?

Have you ever had a trip coming up that you just wish wasn't happening? That's what I have but I'm determined to make the most of it.

I'll be heading off to Terrigal for a couple of days for my cousins wedding, I really have no idea where it is other than it's on the Central Coast so I'm expecting it to be warm, I expect to lay in the sun, I expect good food and a couple of delicious cocktails that are deceivingly strong. If I don't get these things I have a tantrum bottled up and ready to go.

We (mum, dad, my grandmother and I) decided to travel light; carry on only. We figured this would be ok since we are only going for 2 nights but I actually had to do a lot of prep work to downgrade my bag from the usual check in luggage to a tiny little carry on. I am an over-packer freak, I love to take things that I won't use and I actually had anxiety while packing my luggage this time because I was making a conscious effort to pack light. Want to see how I managed?

I started with clothing and accessories...

1. Shorts - Weather report says low 20's Thursday (day I arrive) and mid 20's Friday and Saturday (day I leave). I don't care if it's snowing! I will live in these shorts while I'm there, they are my favourite; torn, stretched, faded, comfortable, the best. One pair will do because I'll likely only be able to wear them for a few hours anyway.
Original number packed: 3.

2. Tops - Two singlets and a crop because on of the singlets is very.. booby.
Original number packed: 4.

3. Pyjamas - One pair of comfy old shorts and one old singlet, I don't really own proper pyjamas and the ones that I do own aren't suitable when I'm sharing a room with mum and nan.
Original number packed: 2 sets of 2 pieces.

4. Wedding Outfit - This is a much loved favourite, Forever New skater style. Think it will go well with pastel purple hair?
Original number packed: 1, I'm only a little bit crazy.

5. Belt - Goes with the dress and will match my shoes.
Original number packed: 1

6. Accessories - A pair of multi-coloured leaf earrings (which I may not wear, will decide on the day), a cuff bracelet and a black bow ring.
Original number packed: 2 necklaces (opted to wear my usual cross because I don't like to take it off), 3 rings, 2 bracelets, an anklet and 3 pairs of earrings.

7. Underwear - Figured I'd save you the trauma of looking at my dainties! I have 2 pairs of socks, 2 g-strings and 2 pair of nickers in the delicates bag.
Original number packed: As listed above except I had 2 bras in there too, I'm a bra re-wearer so I definitely wouldn't have used the spares and I plan to be in bathers during my free time anyway.

8. Bathers - One pair will do, I always wash after using and hang to dry so the material isn't destroyed by sunscreen/salt/chlorine.
Original number packed: 2.

9. Wedding Shoes - I had a super hard time with this one.
Original number packed: 3, they wouldn't fit.

10. Hat - I like to wear a hat when I'm in the sun, so this was essential.
Original number packed: 1, the only one I have.

So here are the clothes and accessories, the last minute changes that I made were putting the shoes in a delicates bag and adding a pair of thongs so I didn't have to wear heels down to the pool (not that I'd have a problem with that but after a few drinks it could be dangerous).

Next I moved on to skin care/hair/body/etc..

1. Hair Brush and Hair Tie - I'm cheating a little bit here because I will take my Tangle Teezer Compact Styler in my handbag but the paddle brush is essential for drying my hair before styling.
Original number packed: I would have liked to bring 3 with me.

2. Sunscreen - This one is for the body, since I actually don't like sunscreen it was easy for me to only pack one.
Original number packed: 1.

3. Cotton Pads and Tips - The cotton pads I counted out, having a rough idea of how many I would need for each night, the cotton tips I just grabbed a few in case.
Original number packed: Whole roll of cotton pads and a generous handful of cotton tips.

4. Hair Clips - For making hair styling easier, when your hair is halfway down your back things like this are a serious help.
Original number packed: 4, I like to use maaaaany clips. I can make do with 2.

5, 6 & 7. Philosophy Purity Face Wash, Lancome Bi-Facil, Vaseline Q10 Body Lotion - When I did my 'practice run pack' I was frustrated at how bulky all my skin care products were, while mum was lifting my case and shaking her head I was holding back tears of frustration. Then I stopped being a dick head and remembered that I have a million travel size samples stashed away. Now I'm holding back tears of joy.
Original number packed: Full size bottles of my usual face wash, makeup remover and body lotion.

8 & 9. Next to number 8 is a lilttle bottle of Kosmea Youth Boosting something, it's basically a facial oil and it's so teeny that it got lost in the picture when I was numbering everything, this will be my night serum, number 8 is a Malin & Goetz lip balm and 9 is my prescribed spot treatment.
Original number packed: As above, they are all my current products in use and I didn't feel any of them needed to be downsized.

10, 11 & 12. QV Cream, Easydew Sunscreen & Clinique Even Better Eyes - The QV cream is for my feet, I have eczema and it can't be ignored. The Easydew sunscreen is great for the face and will see me through the few days that I'm there and the Clinique eye cream is almost finished and I can't wait for it to be done!
Original number packed: As above except for the QV Cream, I was going to bring a full size tub of my usual stuff.

13, 14 & 15. Dermalogica Microfoliant, Live Clean Daily Moisturiser, People For Plants Night Cream - Also majorly bulky until I had a flash of non-stupidity and decanted a little of each in to mini pots.
Original number packed: As above in full size bottle and tubes.

16. Puretopia Toner - I recently finished the Dermalogica toner and the bottle was still sitting on my desk, so while I was decanting products I thanked God that I keep all my empties for blog posts and after washing it out I poured in a little of my current toner.
Original number packed: Full size bottle.

17. Colgate Travel Essentials (Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Mouth Wash, Floss) - Picked this up at Chemist Warehouse, I usually use an electric toothbrush and was shopping for a standard one when I spotted this and decided it was a good little pack to have, I tossed in some of my favourite flossers because I know I won't want to use the normal stuff.
Original number packed: As above.

18. Razor - Locked and loaded with a fresh blade!
Original number packed: Just the one.

19 & 20. Kerastase Shampoo & Conditioner - Dear people who make little bottles; I love you.
Original number packed: Full size bottles.

21, 22, 23 & 24. GHD, Dove Deodorant, Brush Cleaner, Kerastase Leave In Treatment - I called the hotel to see if they had hairdryers in the rooms, they do and I know it will be shit but I must pack light! Brush cleaner is extremely necessary as I always spot clean after using my brushes. The hair treatment is also necessary, my hair won't suffer any more than it has to while I'm away.
Original number packed: As above but the brush cleaner and hair treatment were in full size bottles.

Here we are post skin/hair/etc packing, so far so good. I have a little more space to spare and I don't feel like I'll be going without. Also I didn't add a single extra thing that wasn't listed!

Finally; Makeup!!...

1. Memebrush Set, Tweezers & Extractor Tool - The Memebrush set is awesome, I'm seriously in love with it and it has just about everything that I'll need. The tweezers and extractor are for emergencies.
Original number packed: As above, I was surprised at how easy it was to pass up the rest of my brushes for this set.

2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. Australis Tint My Brow, Maybelline Concealer, Secret Key Sweet Glam Tint Glow, Revlon Balm Stain, Bobbi Brown Mascara, Flormar Gel Pencil - Cutting down the makeup was hard, let's not speak of it ever again.
Original number packed: EVERYTHING!

8 & 9. Illamasqua something-or-other (cream pigment) & Bobbi Brown Gel Liner - The Illamasqua pigment is used as a colour corrector for my crazy dark circles and I'll never be without my gel liner.
Original number packed: Just these ones, they are my go-to's.

10, 11 & 12. Crown Brush Deluxe Blending Brush, Dermalogica Age Smart Primer & Giorgio Armani Designer Lift Foundation - Since the Memebrush set doesn't come with a fluffy blending brush I wasn't going to leave home without one. The primer and foundation are go-to's as well.
Original number packed: As above.

13. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light - Fave as a highlighter, soft blush and blush booster.
Original number packed: This one and The Wardrobe.

14. Naked 1 Palette - Fucking eye shadows, while the palettes may be compact they are too damn big for carry on!
Original number packed: This one, Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette and Smashbox Full Exposure Palette.

15, 16 & 17. Illamasqua Setting Powder, Essence Blush & Manicare Glam Eyes Miranda Lashes - These were all easy since they are the only ones in my rotation at the moment. Yes I only have one blush and it's cheap and fantastic!
Original number packed: As above.

18. Ralph Lauren Ralph - I struggled with perfume, I knew I wanted to take small bottles in case they leaked (has happened to me on a plane, at least my bag smelt good for a while). All the sample sizes I had didn't really feel like a good representation of 'me' so I went with an oldie but a goodie. If it leaks I'll be upset because I do really love this perfume but it's almost empty so I will only cry a little bit.
Original number packed: 5 sample tubes.

And I'm done!!! I didn't add anything extra to my makeup but you will be able to see on the right a glowmesh clutch and a packet of strong painkillers which mum reminded me about as I was taking the final photos for this post.

So I'm off on my trip, pray for sun, no family drama, that my elderly nan doesn't get too exhausted and that I get to lay by the pool with at least one cocktail!! Oh and I might try to be Instagram happy with this trip so if you'd like to see pictures feel free to follow me!

  1. AWESOME job on packing lightly! I know I would've had to pack at least 5 lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes haha. Enjoy your getaway! :)

    1. Even though I packed light I still din't use everything. *rolls eyes*

I know that if I didn't take those things I would have wanted them though!

  2. I'm atrocious at packing lightly (a fact I re-discovered during my recent overseas trip), although I like to think I'm better at it when it comes to short trips. I'm also not great at using/wearing everything in my suitcase either, although I made it my mission last time to do so. Only a partial success though.

(Oh and hotel hair dryers really aren't great are they? I feel like it takes me forever to blow dry my hair when I use one. Always happy to come home to my purple Parlux.)
