Subscription Box - Monstrositea June 2014

28 May 2014
My Monstrositea box arrived without me even realising this month, one minute it wasn't on my bed and the next it was.

Magic.

Actually it was probably tossed on my bed by one of the family members but it was so inconspicuous that I have no idea how long it sat there for, when I realised what it was I eagerly snatched it up but I gotta be honest, I was a little confused.

This months box came in a thin cardboard box, kind of like a chunky envelope, inside I found a note about the new packaging explaining that people weren't keen on receiving a tin every month, I actually love the tin but I also don't feel like I need to receive one every month, realistically they will eventually end up in the bin but one or two will come in handy, thankfully though the tins aren't gone for good, they will be a part of each box every six months.

On to the teas!

Monstrositea - Lavender
I was not excited to see this in my box, I actually dislike lavender for many reasons but the two that really brought about my dislike were; A) growing up I had a massive lavender bush growing in front of my bedroom windows, every time I opened a window a bee would fly in to my room and torment me, several times I was stung, once while I was sleeping. B) I associate lavender with heart ache, this also stems back to my childhood. Mum was big on aromatherapy and after an incident where we lost a dog she started putting a few drops of lavender oil in my bath or in an oil burner, it works wonderfully for helping a broken heart but I still associate it with emotional pain. I brewed half a cup of this to try and it's actually really nice, the taste is subtle and some of the lavender flowers open when they re-hydrate and they just look so stunning. I'll be saving this for the days when I feel like I've slipped off the top of the world and need a pick me up. My advice with this tea, drink it when you're down and breathe deep before each sip.

Truly Tea - Lemongrass and Ginger
Gosh I feel like we are getting off to a bad start, I really dislike lemongrass and also ginger! Ha! I have to laugh over this. I'm actually sipping a cup of this as I write up this post and it's nice, despite not liking the ingredients I'll happily drink it, no honey necessary ;)

Lupicia - Kotabuki
This is a flavoured Oolong tea, it has the typical Oolong flavour but with a little extra something, Monstrositea say it's floral, plum, vanilla and butter flavours but I think all I can pick up is the plum. Delicious.

Kotabuki: I like to just pop the Oolong leaves in a glass so I can brew them over and over easily.
Zee Tea - Vanilla Deluxe
This was the first one I tried because I think flavoured black tea is the shit! This is actually a combination of green and black tea with added bits to give it a vanilla flavour. The leaflet claims that this is a creamy tea and to test that out I took a sip without adding milk or sugar and oh my gawd it is true. Sorcery! This box is full of suprises, I don't know how they do it! With milk and sugar it's absolutely lovely too.

Again I'm super pleased with the June box, I discovered that I actually like some stuff that I thought I couldn't stand and that Vanilla Deluxe is seriously something out of this world.. How do they make it taste creamy!?!

More details on the Monstrositea subscription box can be found on their website.

  1. I too was confused about the packaging! I like the little tins, although I think i'd get a bit sick of them after awhile! This was my third month, and I think my last one as i've suspended my subscription for the moment. I've only tried the Vanilla so far and love it. The Lavender concerns me a little, but after reading what you've said about it I will give it a try!

    1. Yup, I think the tin thing was a good idea, I also love them but don't need a million laying around the house. Don't be frightened of the Lavender, follow the directions on the sheet and you'll have a lovely subtle tea that is really quite enjoyable!

  2. Wow, I've not heard of this subscription box before, how interesting! I used to really dislike vanilla flavoured scents, now about ten years later I just love it! Funny how your tastes can completely change over a period of time. :)

  3. This month was my first Monstrositea and I received mine in a tin, but am glad to know I won't get a tin everytime, don't really need that many! I also loved the Vanilla Deluxe, but wasn't too thrilled with the Lemongrass and Ginger only because my cupboard is full of it and I don't drink it a lot (people keep giving it to me!). The Lavender is interesting and I haven't tried the Oolong yet but am looking forward to it.

    1. I went through my tea and coffee cupboard the other day and I found so much rosehip tea it looked like I had raided a every store in Melbourne, I have no idea how it got there, I don't even drink it!
