La Roche-Posay - Effaclar Duo*

22 May 2014
This product was sent to me by La Roche-Posay last year to trial and I have really struggled to understand what the fuck it was meant to do for me. Initially I used it as a spot treatment, just dabbing it on the offending puss demon trying to make a home in my face, this worked quite well initially but I knew this wasn't really the right way to use it.

The box says it should be used as an all over treatment to unclog pores, treat existing spots and prevent new breakouts. Problem is I don't have trouble all over with my skin so this stuff got pushed aside and every time I looked at it I knew I would some day get my head around it and manage to work out how to best incorporate it in to my routine. That time has come.

So I've been trying out a new night moisturiser and I'm pretty sure it was wreaking havoc with a good chunck of my t-zone. My chin was bad, pores seriously clogged and wonderful new pimples coming up and quickly becoming big white pussy ferals on my face, then my nose started to do the same thing, I NEVER get spots on my nose, but blackheads are a constant for me in that area. I wasn't having any major issues with my forehead but threw this area in to the treatment mix just for good measure.

Over the last four weeks I have used Effaclar Duo exclusively on my T-zone area twice a day and I'm figgin' OVER it!

Effaclar Duo claims to 'Purify pores, reduce imperfections and help skin to look clearer and smoother'. I have had absolutely none of this.

Lets start with my forehead, this area was basically ok, there were a few little bumps but nothing serious and they would usually disappear as quickly as they popped up, since starting to use this product they have popped up and popped up and popped up and hung around like a fucking bad smell.

My nose was always a blackhead minefield, nothing ever clears them but I don't try to hard to get rid of them really. The spots that developed from the night cream slowly disappeared after I started using the Effaclar Duo but no quicker than the rate they would have cleared if I used nothing. My pores are also still harboring their little blackhead mates.

My chin is fucked, there is some seriously shifty crap going on in that area, I have a bunch of little spots that look like whiteheads that are deep under the surface, I'm way too frightened to try to pop them because scars on the face aren't really my thing, I also have blackheads and proper devil pimples, the pimples have stuck around like a drunk at a local bar, they don't listen when I call out last drinks. As for preventing further breakouts I have developed nice deep blind pimples that are showing no sign of going back to whichever of the 9 circles of hell they originated from or even coming to a head so I can try to extract them. Although the first picture looks worse than the second this is after 28 days of morning and night use, during this time I have had pimples come and go.

So Effaclar Duo has had absolutely no effect on my skin whatsoever (could possibly have made it worse), it has had enough time to start pulling it's weight if you ask me. I'm dead set relieved that I am now able to start using my old favourites to try to fix the fuckery that is going on with my face.

Lets talk a little about the product itself.

You get 40ml of product in a sleek and skinny tube, it retails for $27.99AUD in Priceline stores. When I read that this was an all over treatment for the face I was a little confused, the tube is tall but slim and holds a fairly small amount of product, if you're using this all over your face twice a day you're going to get through the tube really quickly, hence why I thought it was more of a spot treatment.

The packaging really doesn't offer a lot of information on how to use it, just "Apply morning and/or evening on the whole face" when I read that I assume it's a moisturiser which may very well suit you if you have super oily skin but it's definitely not enough for me.

The texture is a cream gel, it's very light and has a nice fresh scent, it absorbs fairly quickly and doesn't leave a residue on the skin.

Pros:
  • Consistency is nice and it absorbs quickly.
  • Smells good!

Cons:
  • Had absolutely no effect on my skin.
  • Fairly expensive for a small amount of product.

Conclusion:
I don't like this stuff, not only did it not help me but my skin got worse while using it and it sure as hell wasn't a purging phase. Sorry LRP, this one didn't win me over.

Have you tried Effaclar Duo? If so let me know your thoughts and also how you incorporate it in to your routine.

  1. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo really worked for me! I found that while it didn't help with huge zits (I need something a little stronger for those bad boys) it really shortens the length of those small white heads that are too small to dry out but too big to ignore. Sad that this didn't work for you too, but that's why honest posts like this are needed! :)

    1. Thanks for your feedback Kate! I'm disappointed that it didn't work for me but I agree that it's good to have info on different opinions when it comes to products so I thought it was important to discuss it :)
