Because why not?

Deep Heat - Odourless Heat Patch*

21 May 2014
Recently I was contacted in regards to trialing some Deep Heat Odourless Heat Patches* and if you have been a reader of my blog for some time you will know how I feel about adhesive heat patches, I think they are nothing short of ingenious and I really enjoy using them during Shark Week because I dislike pain and actually find it quite difficult to put up with.

I feel that this review was meant to be because my samples arrived at the perfect time. Usually I have the Elastoplast Patches on hand (as well as some lovely pain relieving tablets.. you know, just in case) for when my cramps kick in so I am no stranger to what a heat pad can do for you when the inside of your body decides to forsake your trust and work against you. I have also reviewed the Libra Hotties which are marketed specifically for use as an external cramp treatment, if you read (or have read) those reviews you will know where my love lies when it comes to these products.

When I felt the telltale pains rear their ugly fat heads I eagerly applied one of the Deep Heat Odourless Heat Patches, they are kept in single plastic sleeves, when they are opened and the patch is exposed to air they start to generate heat. One side of the patch has a sticky adhesive, the other a soft material.

There are two ways of using these patches, after peeling away the adhesive protection strip you can either stick it directly to the area with pain or, if you have an allergy or sensitivity to adhesives, you can stick it to your clothing with the soft material side sitting against your skin to prevent a rash from developing.

I chose to stick the patch directly to my skin as I've never have issues with adhesive, within about a minute of having this on my skin I could feel the heat start to radiate from the patch and I gotta say, I was damn impressed.

Usually I find it difficult to stand when I'm dealing with cramps, a fetal position is usually how you'll find me for the first day or two during my period but I had no choice than to be out and about this particular time, surprisingly I didn't feel the need to sit (or crawl in to a ball and cry) once, I was very comfortable and even cheery and feeling very happy with life (shock horror!), what surprised me even more was that the patch produced so much heat that I had to strip off my jumper during a chilly 12 degree morning because I was so warm!

These patches work and when it comes to producing heat the Deep Heat brand has been the most impressive for me, it's not so hot that it's unbearable or I worry that they will damage my skin but it's warm enough to feel that it is significantly heating the area, when the cramps start I can still feel it but it is much milder than it would be with no heat treatment and it passes very quickly rather than being an ongoing pain that I would have to endure for anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes. What surprised me about these specific patches was that the heat felt like it wasn't just on the surface of the skin, I could feel that the heat was penetrating the skin and heating me up inside as well.

These patches are supposed to stay warm for up to 8 hours, I wore mine for 6 hours and while it was still warm when I removed it, it wasn't as hot as the first few hours of heat it produced. After I removed the patch I noticed I wasn't getting cramps at all, I'm not sure if they had decided they were done torturing me or if the patch had helped to stop them, usually I have cramping for the best part of 48 hours, either way I was pleased with life.

I also commandeered my mum to use one of these patches, she has pretty severe back and neck pain so when I heard her complain about the pain I went running for a patch. Although mum doesn't quite understand the depth that a review like this requires I think her comments speak volumes; "These really work! Can we buy more?"

Pros:
  • Stick well
  • Heat up the area in a way that is super effective
  • Really warm!
  • Long lasting

Cons:
  • Nothing, I really love these patches

Conclusion:
These are fantastic, I think what has made me enjoy these more than the Elastoplast Patches is that they are not only hotter but the heat penetrates deep and after I take the patch off the symptoms don't return. I wouldn't have thought there would be a difference between the brands but there is! I'll be choosing the Deep Heat brand in the future. They make me feel like this:
