Because why not?

Maybelline - Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer.

5 April 2014
I've seen rave reviews for the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer and the first thing I have to say is: Calm down, these bloody long names are getting out of hand and it's so unnecessary! Also the name of this one has a bit of an Engrish thing going on which grind my gears.

Ok let's forget about the name fail and look at the product it's self.

First up: Packaging.
This little plastic tube holds 6ml of product, to dispense it you twist the maroon section near the applicator. This is all fine, I don't care so much about how it's dispensed and to be honest I actually like the twist dispenser but what really reaaaaallllly confuses me is the applicator. The tip is a fluffy sponge and I just can't! I understand why they may have opted for this applicator, if you gently buff it over the skin you can get a fairly nice finish, it's almost like using a mini buffing brush to apply concealer, the finish is nice but for God's sake it is the mankiest thing I have ever seen, to me it's like using a brush for weeks on end to apply makeup and never washing it, it is revolting. I am genuinely tempted to try to deep clean it but I'm quite confident that would result in water in the formula. This really shits me, Maybelline would have a team of people helping to conceptualise and create these products and I have no doubt that these people are aware of hygiene issues when it comes to applicators like this, moist products can hold bacteria and women are putting it near their EYES. The whole thing makes me angry.

The formula is great, this stuff has a fantastic ability to cover so damn well without looking cakey and without migrating to lines. This is a seriously impressive concealer and if you are a fan of YSL Touche Eclat you can go ahead and grab the lighter shade and use it as a highlighter because it does that damn well too (you'll also be saving a pretty penny). This also doesn't just have to be used around the eyes, dab it on redness, scarring and spots because it'll deal with those easily as well.

I seriously do not know what Maybelline was thinking with the applicator, they have a fantastic concealer in that tube and then surround it with a nifty dispensing method but top it off with a disgusting applicator. I would have preferred to see this either in a tube without the applicator or with a small buffing brush included because that applicator makes my skin crawl.

With concealer                            Without Concealer

Concealer applied to both eyes.

Now I've had this for nearly a month and I use it everyday, I seriously LOVE the formula but after a week I was having application issues because I was freaking out when it came to putting it near my eyes so I worked out a way to sanatise it without compromising the actual concealer, I take my Isopropyl and a face cloth and I spot clean it like I would a brush, I then let it sit with the cap off so that it can dry completely. Doing this makes me feel a little more comfortable about using the applicator.

Can you tell how much I hate that applicator yet?

Pros:
  • Fantastic concealer, does it's job so damn well!
  • Easily covers dark circles (if they are very dark like mine you might want to incorporate some colour correcting before use), scars, pigmentation and redness.
  • Buildable without looking cakey.

Cons:
  • Manky applicator.

Conclusion:
I love this stuff, I honestly do, it has taken pride of place over some damn expensive and hard working concealers that I have in my stash, it is comparable to some of the best on the market but that bloody applicator is just so wrong. Would I buy it again? Yes, it's a damn good product but I also have sneaky plans to rip that applicator off when I'm nearing the end of the product so I can see what my options are for my next one.

If you've tried this concealer let me know your thoughts on the applicator.

  1. I love the before and after photos! The concealer really works its magic. I also agree that the name is a mouthful and how unhygenic the brush is. Do you know if theres a yellow tone shade or are the concealers more pink based? Thanks!

    1. I find the undertones of these to be quite neutral so once you find one of the colours that is the closest match to your skin you should find that it blends quite well with your foundation unless you are using a heavy yellow or pink undertone foundation. If you're unsure I would go in to a store and swatch them and blend a little of your foundation over part of the concealer to see how they match up.

Personally in the photos above I think it looks quite yellow on my skin but once I've applied my foundation it all blends seamlessly and whether I choose to put it under or over my foundation I still get a nice result.
