Because why not?

Layla - Hologram Effect Nail Polish.

28 March 2014
I recently picked up some Layla Hologram Effect Polishes from a trade store.. they were on sale so obviously I had to have them but I was a good girl, I swear, the whole range was available and I only grabbed 2 out of the 7 or so colours. See, good girl!

I've actually never used a hologram polish, since I've recently become obsessed with glitter polish it was the clear next step to absolutely need hologram polishes like I need air to live. Colours 12 Red Taboo and 14 Cloudy Violet are the new additions to my already way-too-big-for-one-person polish collection and although I have some gripes about these polishes I'm feeling the need to purchase the rest of the colours. Thank god the trade store is well out of my way right?!

I'm already scheming about having an excuse to go down there next week... Shhhh don't tell mum.

I chose to wear Cloudy Violet first and the name is so fitting, it's a grey based purple and seriously pretty. You'll have to forgive my crappy photos of the polishes in action, I can't work out how these Beauty Bloggers manage to really capture how amazing holo polishes are, even out in the direct sunlight I couldn't make it happen, if you have tips please fill this noob in!

I managed 4 days wear with this polish before chipping.

I decided that I had to test these out properly so I applied a long wear base coat, 2 coats of the polish and a long wear top coat. Base coats are something that I often don't bother with, I like to change my nail polish often, especially when I have new ones laying around but after my last use of a Layla polish I wanted to give it a proper chance to impress me.

You can kind of get the idea with this one and it's easily my favourite of the two.
My first and only issue with these polishes is the application. A thick coat will give you a perfect opaque finish but the polish is so thin that it's difficult to get the right amount on there in one application. When I go in for a second coat the dried polish from the first coat is easily broken down by the new wet polish and often this leads to streaky spots or less opaque patches. Basically if I don't get it right with the first layer and need to go in for a second I have to use the lightest hand, the brush can't actually touch the nail because it disturbs the colour pigment and micro glitter, it's extremely tedious. With that said I hear streaks are pretty typical with holo polishes and the right base coat is essential (read: more shopping necessary).

Red Taboo is not red, it's pink, no questions about it, I could clearly see it was pink when I purchased it. I suspect they called it Red Taboo because it's naughty to tell lies.

The hologram effect on this one isn't as prominent as Cloudy Violet (it's not just my crappy photo). I had a bridal client grab my hand as it was coming in to apply some blush so she could take a closer look at Cloudy Violet, cooing over how pretty it was but with Red Taboo I could barely tell it was holographic. I also found this one didn't wear as well, within 48 hours I had tip wear which you will be able to see in the photo above.

Pros:
  • Really pretty when the holo effect is prominent.
  • Cloudy Violet wears quite well.

Cons:
  • Seems that the formulas aren't exactly the same since one is great and the other is lacking in awesomeness.
  • Application is a little tedious.

Conclusion:
I like these overall, Cloudy Violet wins hands down but I will still wear Red Taboo, having never used another holo polish I can't compare them to anything so I guess I'll just have to buy some more from other brands. Sigh beauty blogger problems!

Do you have some brand recommendations for me to try out?

All Products were purchased by myself and I'm in no way affiliated with any of the companies mentioned unless otherwise stated. Links provided are for shopping examples only, I have personally purchased from some (not all) of these online stores but I highly recommend researching before buying.

  1. Cloudy violet is sooo pretty! If you really like holographic nail polishes, you can try Chanel. They make some pretty cool ones. They are expensive though! :)
