Because why not?

Essence - Stays No Matter What Waterproof Eyeliner Pen.

20 March 2014
Inexpensive makeup is hard to find in Australia, especially if you are looking for quality, killer products that do their job fantastically. I'd always ignored Essence products until I saw them getting some rave reviews because I can be a makeup snob, but this doesn't just apply to low cost makeup, I turn my nose up at some of the most expensive brands too.

My first little Essence haul contained the Stays No Matter What Waterproof Eyeliner Pen, I didn't read the packaging properly and was expecting a cream pencil so I was a little shocked when I saw it was a felt tip pen, I thought they had made a mistake, turns out I was just having a dippy day.

Usually I don't go for liner pens, I'm a gel girl at heart but I'm willing to give them a go, this one, unfortunately, wasn't all that great though.

I only got to use this twice, once for my initial use and the second for swatch photos. The next time I went to use it, to show how it looked on the eye, it had dried up! I've made the mistake of not capping liner pens properly in the past, I actually ruined a really expensive one last year so I'm a stickler for double checking that the caps are on tight and I also store them standing up, cap down, to ensure good product flow, with all of these measures taken to ensure the longest possible lifespan of the pen, I was legitimately shocked that after such a short time my pen had shit it's self.

So short life span aside I still felt like this could be reviewed with an objective view, let's face it, it's a $2 product, I don't expect miracles from it, Essence products are the epitome of disposable makeup, there is no need to ever keep a product beyond it's recommended usage time or worry about a faulty product or shattered compact powder.

Instead of ranting about how this is a completely shitty product I feel I should point out it's good aspects, it had a lovely fine tip and when it was working it worked well, it gave a nice intense black line and depending on how you held the pen or how much pressure you applied, you could get a nice thick or thin line.

I didn't find the formula to be super outstanding, it definitely needs some dry time and it doesn't really "stay no matter what", I actually found it quite easy to smudge as you will see in the photos below and I wouldn't recommend this for people who have oily lids.

For less than $2 this is an ok product, you can make it work. If you're in a pinch and need something cheap straight away then this will work.

  • Nice fine, felt tip.

  • Dried up pretty quickly.
  • Not really budge proof.

I guess it all boils down to whether I would buy it again, I probably wouldn't unless my luggage really was stolen but even then I'd likely still be all grabby grabby towards a gel liner. I can't say I would recommend this but I also can't say stay away from it, it costs about the same as a pack of chewing gum and if you're curious about how it performs you certainly won't be breaking the bank by trying it out. If you're new to pen liners, these would be good to practice with until you get the hang of it before forking out the big bucks for something really nice.

Got a fave Essence product? Let me know what it is in the comments!

  1. I still haven't got my hands dirty in Essence products yet! Mmm when I wear liquid liner, I need a strong colourstay, otherwise it will transfer to my eyelids.. I might give this one a miss!

    1. Yeah I need something that stays put too, I'm ultimately glad that I gave this a go, it's good to know how they perform but I would buy a pack of gum instead next time haha

  2. Thanks for yet another great review! I've bought some Essence products based on rave reviews on BH, but I've been disappointed with them i.e. a lip gloss that stung my lips, eyeshadow with poor colour payoff, eye pencils that crumbled, and lip liners that were too soft. I've just bought their lipstick which won a Glosscar, so I'm hoping that will be better.

    1. I can't say I have used a super duper awesome amazing Essence product but whenever I pick up something new and try it out I seriously take in to consideration the price and I have to admit I reckon for the cost of the products they are really not bad at all, I have purchased some $20-30 products that have disappointed me more than most Essence products. Although I didn't get much use out of this pen I did manage to think of a time when I would use it again (messy SPFX work that would ruin the product anyway) so I can't say it's completely shit and throw it to the wolves if you know what I mean.. I must admit that I don't mind their blush singles, they aren't highly pigmented but that suits me as I like to layer stuff anyway. I'm keen to try out more of their range because it's always nice to have cheap options for when I'm just playing around but I also feel it's important to review it with standard wear because ultimately that's what people will be looking to use the products for. I'll be trying out some of their lipsticks too, after the Glosscars win I'm really curious about those!

  3. I have used Essence stay no matter what pencil, and it was so bad, I find that Essence lip liners and new long lasting lipsticks are great, worth trying.
