Because why not?

Saturday Sample.

3 August 2013
Right lets take a little lookie loo at a primer that has been out for ages, is quite well known and also popular. Then I'll poke some holes in it!

Here we have Loreal Paris Base Magique Primer. I'm going to break this post down so I can touch on a few subjects. I'd also like to point out that I have a full size jar but choose to use my sample tube instead, you'll understand why shortly.

Packaging: I got a 5ml sample tube and it's lasted me quite a while, I would estimate I've got about 8 uses out of it so far and there is still product in there so this stuff goes a long way. Now these little tubes have a dome tip with a teeny tiny hole so squeezing out the product as you need it is super easy. The full size jars are just beyond me. Why did Loreal choose to put this in a jar? A friggin' jar.

I have a few issues with products in jars, firstly; hygiene: I don't like sticking my fingers in jars, obviously before you do your makeup you make sure your hands are clean but after makeup training it has been drummed in to me even more to not depot or dispense products using your fingers, a spatula or cotton tip is a safer option, since I have to follow these rules for my work I also follow them in my personal life, developing good habits starts at home!. Now this is fine for me because I have a small army of spatulas and literally thousands of cotton tips available for my use but this isn't the case for everyone. If you are consious of hygene and want to use this product add a box of cotton tips on to the price and be prepared to use and toss one out every day just to get some product out of the jar invest in a spatula.

Secondly; If you aren't anal about dispensing products without using your fingers you can expect to find this stuff under your nails after dipping a finger in the jar (applies mostly to those of us with longer nails). I can't stand this, sometimes I'm in a damn rush and don't realise until hours later that I've been carrying ninja primer around for half a day. Yuck.

So Loreal, please, for the love of being clean and not having to piss fart around with your stupid jar just put your product in a large tube just like the sample ones you so kindly send out.

The primer..

Smoothed out.

Product: This stuff is really thick, I find it can be a little time consuming making sure that it's smoothed over the entire face evenly but it does leave a nice silky finish. Makeup applies over it easily and I always get a nice even finish with my foundation, pores and lines are diminished a little.

As for how it fares throughout the day.. Well, I personally think it's sub-par. I find around my T-Zone that there is separation of product, I need to tap my foundation back in to place and if I don't you can imagine that it looks pretty crap. This could easily be combated by setting foundation with a powder but I don't like to do that.. I buy a dewy finish foundation for a reason.

So would I recommend this? It's a tough one, I've read glowing reviews and in all honesty it's not bad but it's also not great. That friggin' jar just annoys me to no end so I can safely say I will not be buying again! I chose to Saturday Sample this because the sample packaging wins hands down for me and if I reviewed the full sized product I'd just be screaming about a jar for 10 paragraphs, which I basically did anyway. All that aside the actual product it's self is ok, personally I would choose Benefit's Porefessional over this if it came to buying a primer that I'm familiar with.

Have you tried this primer? Am I being too harsh or have you had issues with it as well?

All Products were purchased by myself and I'm in no way affiliated with any of the companies mentioned unless otherwise stated. Links provided are for shopping examples only, I have personally purchased from some (not all) of these online stores but I highly recommend researching before buying.

  1. I totally agree with you on the jar thing! Especially the long nails problem as even if you wash your hands thoroughly, I'm still a bit weary of bacteria and all. I personally find this primer performs really well on my skin but it is more on the expensive side and there are a few primers out there nowadays that are cheaper with the same quality.

    1. I can deal with the product not being perfect because I know I can do other things to make it work well for me but the jar... That's the straw that breaks the camels back for me!
