Because why not?

Rimmel - Apocalips.

19 July 2013
Ermahgerd!! These are so popular right now! Search Rimmel Apocalips and there certainly isn't a shortage of information. I hated them when I first applied them to my lips but it was my fault....  I'm not gonna show you swatches or what it looks like on lips, there are a million of these blog posts over the net and you don't really need to see another one. I'm just going to tell you my first impressions and finally give a little review.

So I picked up three of these when they were on sale recently at Priceline. I swatched all the samples and picked my favourites. They looked really nice on the back of my hand, beautifully pigmented and opaque without being overly sticky. I was happy.

Phenomenon | Nude Eclipse | Stellar
Then I got them home and gave them a whirl. Ugh vom!

You know when you have dry lips and colour clumps in certain areas and it looks totally gross? Yeah I had that. So I worked out pretty quickly that this formula isn't going to be anytime and all the time friendly. If your lips aren't in tip top condition don't even go there! Make sure you exfoliate and moisturise them first sister because there is nothing worse than flaky lips with highly pigmented gloss clinging to dry areas. I should have known this was going to happen, I understand what makeup does on dry skin but I tend to believe that glosses are a little more forgiving on the lips.

Needless to say I scrubbed my lips and put those glosses away. I wasn't in the slightest mood to be playing around and the patchy application wasn't the only reason why.
I noticed when applying the gloss that there was a metric crap tonne being dispensed on to my lips.. What the.. On closer inspection I noticed the doe foot applicator had a little groove in it that holds extra product so you don't have to dip the wand back in the tube. How clever! Except it's kinda not. Here's the issue, it so easily dispenses too much product. This stuff is thick (but not sticky) and intensely pigmented, so much so that it will stain your lips (darker colours are the culprits here). You only need the smallest amount. This groove in the applicator is genius and I really like it but it has no place with this particular product, I want to see it make an appearance on all those softly pigmented glosses where you can get away with wearing layers and layers.

See the little product well? Fantastic.

There is another thing I love about the applicator though, the tip is slightly bendy so it moves beautifully with the curves of your lips. Love that Rimmel. LOVE.

Ok so after not being impressed with the product I knew I had to make them work for me. I made sure my lips were hydrated and on clean lips (removing traces of balm) I applied Stellar, the darkest of the 3 that I owned, and wore it for the whole day. I was feeling less hatred towards them this time, I knew the applicator could produce a disaster so I applied a dab with the side that has the groove and with the opposite side of the doe foot I smoothed out the product. Much nicer, beautiful, intense, even colour.

Pros:
  • Gorgeous intense colour.
  • Long lasting.
  • Applicator has some give so moves beautifully with your curves.

Cons:
  • Unforgiving on dry lips.
  • Application can be a PITA with that groove in the doe foot, careful not to apply too much.
  • Transfers on to everything. Expect to see it on your coffee cups, utensils and sandwiches.
  • Not particularly hydrating.
  • Stinky - Kind of plastic with a slight fruitiness. I dunno, it's gross but not overpowering.

Conclusion:
I like 'em but they are nothing miraculous and I don't really get why people are going mad for them. I can see these making an appearance in 'don't believe the hype' videos on youtube. Ultimately they are like a liquid lipstick and I think the only super special thing about them is that groove in the applicator. Don't get me wrong they are nice but after reading all the 'OMG's' and 'These are Amazeballs!' I expected more. I'll use them but I won't be rushing out to buy the range for my freelancing kit or picking up more for my personal use.

Have you tried them? What do you think? Amazing or just ok?

All Products were purchased by myself and I'm in no way affiliated with any of the companies mentioned unless otherwise stated. Links provided are for shopping examples only, I have personally purchased from some (not all) of these online stores but I highly recommend researching before buying.

    1. Yup, I don't understand the hype and I actually think the lighter colours look pretty horrible and give a super sub-par finish (unfortunately I bought 2 *sigh*) but I haven't put much effort in to making them work for me so I based my opnion on the darker colour that I own and while it's nice I could rattle off a million other glosses that I like more. I totally agree with you, I wouldn't pay full price and so happy that I didn't on these. The stink is gross but the packaging is a winner so at least they'll look pretty in my room if nothing else lol!
