July Collective Haul.

31 July 2013
Today we bid July Goodbye and prepare to say hello to August and the last month of winter.

July was not much of a shopping month for me and I've been tossing up with the idea of going on a spending ban but I just don't like the thought of that, makes me feel like I'm irresponsible with money and have no self control, which I personally think I have a lot of. Instead I'm thinking I might do a project pan, I think that will suit me better because I get such crazy satisfaction from finishing a product.

Beauty Breakdown - Corrective Contouring & Highlighting.

30 July 2013
Last week I discussed face shapes (post here) and I told you that knowing your face shape can be important for product placement, this week I'm going to talk about how you can enhance your face shape with contouring and highlighting.

Saturday Sample

27 July 2013
Time for another Saturday Sample! I'm quite impressed at the rate I'm cleaning out my sample box, usually they just sit there, waiting for me to have a need to use them, which is never. I'm weird like that, I like to have them and especially receive them (nothing better than receiving something in the mail that isn't a bill) but I never find a reason to use them unless I somehow run out of something and don't have a back up. Thanks to this blog they have a purpose now.

Today I'll be taking a quick look at Bellaboo's E Z Zit Blitz Serum.

Bullshit or Brilliant? - Rapid Lash

26 July 2013
For the past 42 days I've been applying Rapid Lash as per the instructions; once (almost) every night before bed. For 28 of those days I have also been applying it to my brows. Did it work? Soon you will see if this product was Bullshit or Brilliant.

Bullshit or Brilliant? - What's to Come..

25 July 2013
When I'm watching tv, flipping through magazines or trawling the internet to kill my boredom and I come across ads for cosmetics or beauty products I tend to do one of two things:
1. Freak out like a complete lunatic and try to work out where I can buy it and what would be the fastest method of attaining the product.
Or
2. Make 'That Face'.

Beauty Breakdown - Identifying Face Shapes.

21 July 2013
My Beauty Breakdown series is going to cover theory, makeup and application from a technical point of view, what I hope to achieve with these posts is educating the reader so that you can better understand your facial features and ultimately what will work best for you.

Saturday Sample.

19 July 2013
Today I'll be taking a look at Avon's Anew Aqua Youth Gel Cream.

Got a whole two uses out of this sachet! Wooo!
Ok sarcasm aside I do think 2 uses is enough to know whether a product will beak you out and if it meets the small requirements like texture, absorption rate and feel of skin after application (these things actually mean a lot to me and can make or break a product).

Product Claims: Lightweight, refreshing gel-cream helps surface skin look and feel hydrated and plumped.

So obviously I didn't use this long enough to see if it was able to produce results but I can tell you that it stinks. Take cheap generic aftershave and cheap generic body wash and mix equal parts in a bowl and have a good whiff. Want more? No, neither do I.

Also this stuff isn't a gel or a cream or what I would consider anything in between. It's a cloudy fluid, thinner than a typical moisturiser but thicker than water. It kind of reminds me of a thin body lotion. My sachet also said to apply day and night but it's clearly marketed as a night cream on their site but they have no day cream  in the range so I dunno.. Inconsistency annoys me.

As for absorption rate, well it's not too bad to be honest, it didn't leave any residue (sticky/oily/revolting) on my skin which is a big plus for me and it didn't cause any breakouts or aggravate the areas of my skin that are already trying to purge their skin demons.

My skin felt hydrated after application but no more than a cheap moisturiser from Priceline would do and I can't agree that my skin looked or felt 'plumped'. At $49.99 a tub I can't say I'd recommend it but they are offering a 3 piece gift set for a limited time for the same cost of this stuff so that's not a bad deal but you'll have to get yourself an Avon representative and that, if you ask me, is a pain in the ass.

Can't say I'm sad that I've finished my little sachet or will be trying to find an Avon rep to buy more. Instead I'll be digging through my sample box to find something new to try out!

What is your opinion of Avon products?

Rimmel - Apocalips.

Ermahgerd!! These are so popular right now! Search Rimmel Apocalips and there certainly isn't a shortage of information. I hated them when I first applied them to my lips but it was my fault....  I'm not gonna show you swatches or what it looks like on lips, there are a million of these blog posts over the net and you don't really need to see another one. I'm just going to tell you my first impressions and finally give a little review.

Soap & Glory Wonderfill.

17 July 2013
S &G Wonderfill - A temporary line filler, I bought it because I'd never tried anything like it and I thought it sounded plausible. Well people are raving about Nanoblur right?

Comes in a super cute cardboard tube with all the words that suck you in to making a purchase!

Saturday Sample.

12 July 2013
Welcome to Saturday Sample! I really wanted to be able to post quick and easy reviews on the weekend but I work and finding the time can be so difficult so I figured I could do quick sample reviews. Generally these will be like a first impression post as most samples aren't large enough to get a proper idea of what the product can actually do, but occasionally they are just the right size to fall in love or decide that they are oh so wrong.

Today I'll be looking at Molton Brown's Moisture Lock 24hr Replenisher.

I received this in a flight pack, the ones that you get from business and first class, it was full of a bunch of things, none of which were actually used on the flight.. If I'd known of the little miracle it contained I would have been able to stock up while I was away.

I've been using this 7ml tube for a little over 2 weeks and it's just run out sadly. The very first time I used it I was worried, it didn't seem to be absorbing as quickly as I liked and I was in a pinch because I had no other face moisturiser in the house (I have no idea how this happened), I didn't want to overload my already oily skin but to my surprise after about a minute it had completely absorbed and my skin felt lovely and soft.

The next morning I was brushing my teeth and I noticed I didn't have the usual oil slick that I tend to produce over night, I looked a little closer and the freakin' pores on my cheeks near my nose had shrunk! Seriously I had been battling these damn things for so long, nothing ever worked and all it had taken was a tiny sample of a moisturiser that is produced mainly for in flight care kits to fix my face!

How was I going to get more of this?? Fly business class every couple of weeks to keep up my supply? I wish. I researched the product and from what I can tell they use to make large tubes of this but everywhere is sold out except a few I found on Amazon so I'm assuming these are discontinued but they must still produce them for airline travel kits because you can buy the sample tubes in bulk on ebay! ha!

So I have come to terms that this is the end of the road for Moisture Lock and Me but it was so wonderful while it lasted, it was like a very short lived summer romance.. during winter.

Oh well, time to start looking for a new HG moisturiser.

Do you often find products you love via samples or do they end up in a box never to see the light of day again?

Nail Art - Taking The Accent Nail A Little Further.

I like nail art. I'm not very good at it but it's still fun to play. Lately I've been experimenting with taking nail art a little further, these are my results:

Avene - Micellar Lotion.

9 July 2013
Ahhh Avene, a readily available French skincare range. I always expect big things from Avene and when you pair the brand with micellar lotions then I have really high expectations. Enter: Disappointment.

Avene Micellar Lotion
I picked this up with the thought that micellar lotions are basically all the same and since Bioderma wasn't as easily attainable when I need this I was happy to go with Avene. Let me tell you, micellar lotions are not all the same.
Quality Guarantee and Ingredients.
This stuff is very similar to Bioderma Crealine. It doesn't leave a residue, you don't have to wash your face after use (tried and tested, I'm a stickler for washing my face at the end of the day yet my skin feels quite good after using this so I would be comfortable not washing on occasion), it's gentle and mostly does a good job of removing makeup.. Except long wearing makeup, I'm not talking waterproof, just long wearing. Take for example Benefit's They're Real Mascara, I really struggled to get this stuff to move it, I'm sure I would have got it all off eventually but I suspect I would have rubbed off all the skin on my eyelid before I managed to have clean lashes.
Directions for use.
I haven't even bothered to try this with waterproof makeup and I probably never will, if it can't move They're Real then it's not going to be much chop against something that has been made to stay put! This is where Bioderma, Vichy and Avene differ: Bioderma and Vichy can move waterproof makeup even though they don't claim to be able to do that where as Avene claims to be able to remove all traces of makeup but it can't. If you never wear long wearing or waterproof makeup this product could suit you just perfectly but it doesn't meet up to my requirements.
The claims that make you feel like you're buying something great: Part 1.
The claims that make you feel like you're buying something great: Part 2.
Pros:
  • Readily available in Australia.
  • Great for sensitive skin.
  • No need to wash your face after use so great for those late or lazy nights.

Cons:
  • Expensive.
  • Doesn't remove long wearing or waterproof makeup.

Conclusion:
It's pricey and doesn't remove all makeup so what more can I say? It's just not good enough if you ask me, I'll be sticking to Vichy or Bioderma in the future.

Soap & Glory - The Greatest Scrub of All *cough cough*

8 July 2013
I don't really know where to start. I know I have certain things I need to say about this face scrub, things that the Women of the Beauty World must know. Important things. Warnings.

Bioderma Hydrabio - Cleansing Moisturising Foam.

6 July 2013
More French skincare! Today Bioderma Hydrabio Cleansing Moisturising Foam.

If you haven't noticed already, I'm obsessed and it's a problem.

Bioderma Hydrabio Cleansing Moisturising Foam

The Liebster Awards.

3 July 2013
Today has been crap, I feel defeated and I'm definitely not loving life but it was so nice to receive a message from Lady Sapphire letting me know that she had nominated me for a Liebster Award, thank you Lady S for giving me something else to concentrate on today!

Vichy Normaderm - Micellar Water.

Here we are again with the French skincare brand Vichy, today we'll be taking a look at their Normaderm 3-in-1 Solution For Imperfection Prone Skin Micellar Lotion.

For starters (and those who want a quick idea of what this is like) this micellar water is comparable to Bioderma Crealine H2O. It does the same job when it comes to removing makeup, it doesn't leave a residue and if you're comfortable not washing your face after using a makeup removal product then you certainly don't have to with this.

This product claims to cleanse, remove makeup and sooth skin and is recommended for imperfection prone skin consisting of blocked pores, uneven texture, excess oil, redness and/or large pores.

It smells simillar to other micellar waters and is a clear solution. It contains no alcohol, parabens, colours or soap, is hypoallergenic and has been tested on sensitive skin.

My personal experience has been very pleasant. When used with a cotton pad it easily removes all traces of makeup and I've never had an issue with skin or eye irritation. On occasion (usually wee hours of the morning after being out all night) I used this product without washing my face afterwards and didn't experience a single issue with dryness/excess oil, irritation or breakouts the following day.

Pros:
  • Removes all makeup easily.
  • No residue of any kind left on skin.
  • No issues with drying out skin or exacerbating my oil problems.
  • Cheaper than Bioderma Crealine H2O.
  • Gentle on skin.
  • Suitable for sensitive skin types.

Cons:
  • Hard to find in Australia :/
  • Didn't personally see results with blocked pores, uneven texture or reducing the size of my pores.

Conclusion:
Love it, would buy again. If I saw this in a shop and I could choose between Bioderma and Vichy I would just go for the less expensive one on the shelf because they both do the same thing. Vichy really needs to bring their whole range to Australia so people can sample these in store without having to rely on online reviews.

Have you tried micellar solutions? What are your thoughts?

Empty! June 2013.

2 July 2013
It's such a satisfying feeling to use up a whole bottle/tub/tube/pan/whatever of makeup or skincare, I just love to see that I got through it and either never have to deal with it again or have the joy of repurchasing a product that actually worked.

So lets take a look at what I finally got through in the month of June.
