Because why not?

Benefit - They're Real Mascara

30 July 2012
My name's Hailey and I'm a mascara addict. In fact I'm addicted to everything makeup but this particular post is about one of my recent mascara buys.

When I saw the packaging and the pretty display cases as I traveled across Europe the urge to buy something that I knew couldn't deliver what it was offering grew larger and larger until I caved. I bought Benefit's They're Real mascara along with a few other items and sated my hunger for new goodies.

When I finally got home I decided to open this one over my other buys purely because I wanted to prove to myself that I was right when I thought it couldn't deliver what it was claiming, a dramatic increase in length and volume, base-to-tip curl, lift and long wearing results but you know what.. It kinda does! Now on the packaging and display cases the model is clearly wearing false lashes but I kid you not, this stuff does do what it says it will on the pack, your lashes won't look like the ones on the pack unless you apply some falsies but you will get volume, length (I get a lot!), curl and it wears so well, granted I have had some transfer on to my brow bone when my face is in oil slick mode but that happens with 99% of mascaras for me and if I prep my skin properly then it's not an issue.

My issue with this product would probably be the brush, now it's not a big issue, I've already grown to like it, it just took me a little getting use to. The bristles are quite stiff and the first 2 or 3 times I used it I felt almost like I was being stabbed by them. Now before you freak out and say 'No WAY!!! Don't WANT!!!' let me clarify why I experienced this, I had been using an Estee Lauder mascara with a very soft brush for quite a while and I would get it right down on the roots and jiggle it back and forth to help create volume at the base, when I tried to apply my current method to a new product I got a bit of a surprise and it took me a few times to get use to it and realise that I didn't need to jiggle my wand, once my brain and hands started to co-operate with my new toy I was stab free!
The stiff bristles actually help to keep the lashes separated so you don't experience clumping while the formula coats the lashes and makes them look fuller. The tip of the brush also has a ball applicator similar to that of Givenchy's Phenomen'eyes, which is great for getting the inner and outer corner lashes that are missed by the wand and lower lashes

Looking a bit spiky, no? Just be gentle and you'll have no problems.

So what do you think of the difference after application? What's your Holy Grail mascara?

All Products were purchased by myself and I'm in no way affiliated with any of the companies mentioned unless otherwise stated.

  1. One of my favourite mascaras too! It's on my list of reviews to do for my blog too. Definitely a good one. :)
